Your Second Chance: Smashing the November English and Maths Resits
To all the dedicated students in Sutton Coldfield and Tamworth—and everywhere else!—who are preparing for the upcoming GCSE English and Maths resits, we at Ace Education want to send you the very best of luck.
We know that choosing to resit these essential qualifications takes real courage and commitment. It means you’ve taken ownership of your future, and that is something to be incredibly proud of. As the exams approach, typically taking place across the first couple of weeks of November, we want to share some encouragement and a few last-minute tips to help you cross the finish line with confidence.
You’ve Got This: It’s All About Focus
Unlike the main summer exam season, the November resits allow you to laser-focus on just English Language and Maths. This is a huge advantage! You’ve already put in the hard work by revising the content, and now it’s time to fine-tune your approach.
Here are three key areas to concentrate on during these final days:
1. Master Exam Technique (English & Maths)
Knowing the subject is one thing; performing under pressure is another. The difference between a grade 3 and a grade 4 (or higher!) often comes down to how you answer the questions.
- For Maths: Don’t just work through questions; work through full past papers under timed conditions. Get comfortable with the pressure and the clock. Ensure you know the difference between the Non-Calculator and Calculator papers for your exam board and which formulas you need to memorise.
- For English: Practice structuring your responses perfectly. For the writing tasks, focus on clear planning and timing yourself rigorously. For the reading comprehension, pay close attention to the mark allocation and match the depth of your answer to the points available.
2. Identify Your ‘Quick Wins’ (Maths)
In Maths, there are topics that are relatively easy to secure marks in if you know the method. Revisit these core topics for a quick confidence boost:
- Averages (Mean, Median, Mode, Range)
- Basic Algebra (solving linear equations)
- Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages
- Standard Form
If you can confidently bank these foundational marks, you relieve pressure on the more complex questions.
3. Practise Paper 1 and Paper 2 Strategy (English)
The English Language papers test very distinct skills. Make sure you are mentally prepared for the shift in focus:
